Linagliptin is a medication used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is an oral, once-daily dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor that helps lower blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes.
DPP-4 inhibitors work by inhibiting the enzyme DPP-4, which is responsible for breaking down incretin hormones like GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide 1). Incretins play a role in regulating blood sugar levels by stimulating insulin release and decreasing glucagon secretion. By inhibiting DPP-4, linagliptin increases the levels of active incretins, which leads to improved insulin secretion and reduced glucagon production, thereby lowering blood glucose levels.
