Dapagliflozin is a medication from the class of drugs known as sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. It works by inhibiting the reabsorption of glucose in the kidneys, leading to increased glucose excretion through urine. By reducing blood glucose levels, dapagliflozin helps to lower HbA1c (glycated hemoglobin) levels and improve glycemic control. It is typically taken once daily.
Sitagliptin belongs to the class of medications called dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors. It works by inhibiting the enzyme DPP-4, which breaks down incretin hormones such as GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1). By inhibiting DPP-4, sitagliptin increases the levels of GLP-1, which in turn enhances insulin release from the pancreas and reduces the production of glucose by the liver. Sitagliptin is usually taken once daily.
Metformin is a widely prescribed medication for type 2 diabetes. It belongs to the class of drugs known as biguanides. Metformin helps to decrease hepatic glucose production, reduce intestinal glucose absorption, and enhance insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues.
