Losartan potassium and amlodipine are both medications used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). They belong to different classes of antihypertensive drugs and work in slightly different ways to help lower blood pressure.
Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). It works by blocking the effects of angiotensin II, a hormone that causes blood vessels to narrow (constrict) and triggers the release of another hormone called aldosterone, which can lead to salt and fluid retention. By blocking angiotensin II receptors, losartan helps relax blood vessels, reduce fluid retention, and lower blood pressure. This medication is often prescribed to treat hypertension and can also be used to protect the kidneys in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Amlodipine belongs to a class of drugs known as calcium channel blockers. It works by inhibiting the influx of calcium ions into the smooth muscle cells of blood vessels, which results in relaxation and widening (dilation) of the blood vessels. This dilation leads to a decrease in peripheral vascular resistance, which ultimately lowers blood pressure. Amlodipine is commonly prescribed to treat high blood pressure and can also be used to manage certain types of chest pain (angina).
