Metformin and vildagliptin
VILDIABATE M 500  are both medications used to treat type 2 diabetes, but they belong to different classes of drugs and work in slightly different ways to help manage blood sugar levels.
Metformin:
Metformin is an oral medication and is often considered the first-line treatment for type 2 diabetes. It falls into the category of biguanide drugs. Metformin primarily works by decreasing the amount of glucose produced by the liver and improving the sensitivity of muscle cells to insulin, thereby increasing glucose uptake. It also helps in reducing the absorption of glucose from the intestines.
Metformin can be prescribed alone or in combination with other antidiabetic medications, including vildagliptin or other classes of drugs. It has been widely used for many years and has a good safety profile, with gastrointestinal side effects (such as nausea, diarrhea, and stomach upset) being the most common.
Vildagliptin:
Vildagliptin, as mentioned earlier, is a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor. It works by inhibiting the enzyme DPP-4, which breaks down incretin hormones (GLP-1 and GIP). By inhibiting DPP-4, vildagliptin increases the levels of these hormones, which in turn leads to increased insulin secretion and decreased glucagon production. This helps to lower blood sugar levels, particularly after meals.
Vildagliptin is often used as an add-on therapy when metformin alone is not providing adequate blood sugar control. It can also be prescribed in combination with other antidiabetic medications or insulin. Side effects of vildagliptin may include headache, dizziness, gastrointestinal symptoms, and upper respiratory tract infections.
