PRAMIXOLE 0.50
Pramipexole is a medication used primarily to treat Parkinson's disease and restless legs syndrome (RLS). Below, you'll find information about its uses, dosage, and potential side effects:
Uses:
Parkinson's Disease: Pramipexole acts as a dopamine agonist, helping to manage symptoms like tremors, stiffness, and difficulties with movement associated with Parkinson's disease.
Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS): Pramipexole is also prescribed for moderate to severe cases of RLS, which manifests as uncomfortable sensations in the legs and an irresistible urge to move them, especially during periods of rest or sleep.
Dosage:
Parkinson's Disease:
Starting Dose: Typically, the initial dosage is around 0.125 mg taken orally three times per day.
Maintenance Dose: The dose may be gradually increased over time, typically at intervals of 5 to 7 days, based on individual response and tolerability. The maximum recommended daily dose is 4.5 mg.
Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS):
Initial Dose: The starting dose for RLS is usually lower, around 0.125 mg taken orally once daily, approximately 2 to 3 hours before bedtime.
Dose Adjustment: The dosage may be adjusted gradually based on how well it controls symptoms and individual tolerance, with the maximum recommended daily dose being 0.75 mg.
Side Effects:
Common Side Effects: These may include nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, constipation, insomnia, and headache.
Less Common Side Effects: Orthostatic hypotension (a sudden drop in blood pressure upon standing), hallucinations, confusion, impulse control disorders (such as compulsive gambling or eating), and dyskinesias (abnormal involuntary movements).
Rare but Serious Side Effects: Some individuals may experience symptoms of augmentation, where RLS symptoms worsen over time with continued use of pramipexole. Additionally, sudden onset of sleep, sometimes without warning, has been reported.
Withdrawal Effects: Abruptly stopping pramipexole can lead to withdrawal symptoms such as worsening of RLS symptoms, anxiety, agitation, and sweating.
Remember to take pramipexole exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider and report any concerning side effects promptly. Adjustments to the dosage should only be made under medical supervision. Pramipexole may interact with other medications, so inform your doctor about all medications and supplements you're currently taking.
