Sitagliptin is an oral antidiabetic medication classified as a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor. It works by increasing the levels of incretin hormones in the body, specifically glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). These hormones stimulate the release of insulin from pancreatic beta cells and reduce the production of glucagon, a hormone that raises blood sugar levels. By inhibiting the degradation of these hormones, sitagliptin helps to regulate blood sugar levels and improve glycemic control in people with type 2 diabetes.
Metformin is an oral antidiabetic drug classified as a biguanide. It works by reducing glucose production in the liver and increasing the sensitivity of peripheral tissues (such as muscle and fat cells) to insulin. Metformin also helps to decrease the absorption of glucose from the gastrointestinal tract. These actions result in lower blood sugar levels and improved insulin utilization in individuals with type 2 diabetes.
