Praziquantel is an anthelmintic medication used to treat infections caused by parasitic worms. It is commonly used to treat infections with Schistosoma species, which cause schistosomiasis, as well as infections with other types of parasitic flatworms such as liver flukes and tapeworms.
The typical dosage of praziquantel for the treatment of schistosomiasis and other parasitic worm infections in adults and children is based on body weight and the specific type of infection being treated. However, a common dosage for adults is 600 mg taken orally as a single dose or divided into several doses over a day, depending on the infection.
Praziquantel works by affecting the permeability of the parasite's cell membranes, causing paralysis and death of the worms. The dead worms are then expelled from the body through the gastrointestinal tract.
